A "don'tcha love-it?" moment: The following was announced on TV and found on a local school district Website.
Message for December 22, 2005

C********* Middle School #** is closed due to gas leakage. Staff should report.
And some folks are wondering why it is difficult for some school systems to attract and retain good staff/teachers...BTW: The temperature that morning was 29 degrees.

I don't believe this writer would knowingly walk into a building with a gas leak. True, there may have been other circumstances making it safe for teachers at that school - but it surely didn't come off that way when it was announced on television. Poor P/R at best and a safety hazard at worst...

Oh, this was NOT one of our South Baltimore schools.

The Baltimore City Public School System (official name) has charge of the education for approximately 90,000 of Baltimore's school children. The Baltimore public school system maintains about (we don't even know if "they" are sure) 173 schools in all neighborhoods of our city. Two representative Baltimore public school Web sites are: Francis Scott Key Technology Magnet E/M School, which focuses on instructional technology; and The Baltimore City College (whoops, sorry if it is no longer there--a change in administration must have cut the budget. And this is supposed to be a school at the forefront - hmmm... Rumor has it that the budget is currently managed so teachers have to buy their own supplies--y'know, things like copy paper and light bulbs for their overhead projectors. Rumor also has it that there is plenty of money to remodel the principal's office. This is just rumor, mind you, and is probably not true. But if it were, true, "Oh My!" someone's priorities must be waaaaaayyy out of order. ), a high school with a strong liberal arts focus. There are some other good public schools in Baltimore, but unfortunately, none have been provided with Web sites by the school system. The few schools that have Web sites, seem to have created them on their own.

Coppin State College - 2500 W. North Avenue • Baltimore, MD 21216 (410) 951-3000 • Admissions Phone Number: (410) 951-3600 • President: Dr. Stanley F. Battle • Set on 38 acres in northwest Baltimore, Coppin State College is a historically black, four-year liberal arts college providing academic programs in the arts and sciences, teacher education, nursing, graduate studies, and continuing education. Coppin offers 21 majors and 11 graduate-degree programs. A fully accredited urban, residential campus, Coppin serves Baltimore residents as well as students from around the world, with flexible course schedules that include convenient day, evening, and weekend classes.

Baltimore Metropolitan Area
Public School Systems:

* MSPAP is no longer a benchmark for Maryland Schools. The Maryland State Department of Education dropped the MSPAP testing program the year after Baltimore City Public Schools demonstrated large performance increases and the "rest of the state" did not advance. Hmmmmmmm...
